Music Magazine Survey Analyisis
I gave the survey from my last post to several people, who I knew listened to pop punk and other genres which are connected to it, like Rock and Metal, however, not many people I know do. to get over this obstacle, I decided to use the snowballing method, to distribute my survey. I contacted fan pages of pop punk bands and artists on Instagram, with quite large followings. Two of the pages I contacted got back to me and agreed to post my survey on their page. Overall I received 66 responses to my survey. From there I recorded all of the data onto an excel spreadsheet, making it easier organise the results. I then put the data into pie charts, separating the data into different genders, as I noticed that there were differences between different gender's answers.
Most of the people who answered my survey were female, which gives me a good starting point as to who to aim my magazine at, however, males and bi-gendered people also paid some interest, I chose this question so that I can see how much of the number is what gender, so when it comes to making the decisions I can take into account which gender's views I should pay more attention too, however, I wouldn't abandon the minorities completely.
Most people who answered the survey were aged 13-18, Mostly over 16 years old, this gives me an idea of how mature the content should be. I decided to include this question, for the same reason I asked about gender, and also because I don't want to make the magazine too mature for the target group.

When looking at the age of the females, it hardly differs from the overall age, which makes sense because the females make up the majority of the number.
The age of males answering the survey is slightly different. there are hardly any males answering the survey who are under the age of 16. there are double the amount of over 19-year-olds than 13-15-year-olds.
The Bi-Genders are the ones who differ the most. They have nobody between the ages of 16 and 18 who answered the survey. 6 out of the 8 Bi-genders are 15 or under.
I found that the majority of people wanted the colour combination of yellow, Black and white, shortly followed by Black blue and red. I included this question so that I can see what colour scheme the target group want. I don't want to make the magazine pink and purple, when the colours probably won't appeal to most readers. i also left the question open to suggestions, rather than getting them to choose between colours, so that they don't feel restricted and still pick a colour scheme that they don't like.

The males also give a similar result but give no favour to the purple, black and grey combination at all, perhaps it is to do with that fact that purple is seen as a conventionally 'girly' colour.
The Bi-Gendered people give a three way split between the three combinations, also, like the males, not including the purple, black and grey.
Overall, people favoured Interviews with bands and artists over all the other options. Fan art was also a popular option. only 8 out of the 66 people would want more interactive content such as word searches and quizzes and nobody voted for informative articles. I decided to choose this as a question, so I knew what people wanted in their magazine. this will help me when I come to make the contents page for the magazine.
The females vote, like always was pretty much the same as the overall result.
The male vote was also pretty similar to the overall vote, however, there was a tie between the interviews and fan art.
This question had very close results. With three of the options for the price of the magazine having 16 votes each, but the one option having 18 votes. Despite it being so close, the most votes went to £3.00. I included this question so I knew how much people would be willing to pay for the magazine.
Looking at the males vote, we find out that they voted on both ends of the price spectrum. they only voted for the cheapest option or the most expensive however the most expensive option won the most votes.
The vote of the Bi-genders was a 50/50 split. 4 people voting on the £2.50 option and the other 4 voting on £3.50 here I could interpret that I can meet both Bi-gendered opinions and meet halfway and go with the £3.00 price which was the majority vote overall and in the females result.
I asked a question asking how often they would like a new issue to come out and most people in the overall result decided upon a monthly issue, this will help me when creating the front cover and how to display the date of the issue, and could help with some wording in the contents page and double page interview.
There is little to no difference between the overall result and the female result.
Males only said yes.
The Bi-gendered people have another split vote between Yes and Maybe.
The female Vote was similar to the overall result, with 'Verdana' in a first place, however, instead of 'Tahoma' in second, it was beaten by two votes by 'Courier New'.
The males showed a dominant opinion for the font 'Tahoma', shortly followed by 'ST Kaiti' They showed little interest in 'Courier New' and no interest in 'Verdana'.

The Bi-genders voted half and half again, split between 'Tahoma' and 'Verdana'.

Overall, people voted for the title idea 'Amplify' more than the others, they liked 'Revolution' second best, shortly followed by 'Catastrophic'. Nobody voted for 'Blast It'.

The females voted mainly for Amplify, the ratio of data not far different to the overall result.

Despite it being so close, the most votes went to £3.00. I included this question so I knew how much people would be willing to pay for the magazine.
In the female vote of the price, we find that all 18 votes for £3.00 came from females and that both other gender categories didn't vote for it at all. This could be a conflict and make my decision on how to price the magazine harder, however, the females are the majority of the target audience, so their opinion is the most valuable.
Looking at the males vote, we find out that they voted on both ends of the price spectrum. they only voted for the cheapest option or the most expensive however the most expensive option won the most votes.

The female vote is slightly different. The monthly option is still the majority vote, however. contrary to the overall 'weekly' option to be in second place, the females preferred it to be out every two weeks than one.
The males vote does not stray far from the overall result.
I asked this question to find out how many people would be interested in receiving a free gift in the magazine. I found that nobody rejected the idea and all people either said 'yes' or 'maybe', the majority saying yes.
There is little to no difference between the overall result and the female result.
Males only said yes.
The Bi-gendered people have another split vote between Yes and Maybe.
I asked a question in my survey asking what font people preferred out of the four options I gave. the majority voted on 'Verdana' with 'Tahoma' as a close second. I'll use one of the two for the main text of the content in the magazine.

They fit into both the explorer and the mainstream categories. They enjoys to escape their mainstream life by listening to pop punk and rock. They buys and wears clothes and make up that make their fit into society, but also has a slight Gothic streak about their. Their hair is naturally black, which they has cut into a short mod hairstyle. They knows what suits their and what doesn’t. They has good taste. Aside from college and work, they does volunteering occasionally, to make their CV look good, but also to help people. They does the kind of volunteering most people do. Like volunteering in old peoples homes. They seems like a well behaved good citizen. They has a select few friends, but gets along with most people they meets. They rejects Christianity, unlike their family, and they likes to bottle up their feelings. They enjoys trying out new things, and lives for the future, rather than the past.

I would describe my self as an explorer, as well as a reformer. I like to discover new things, but I also take pride in being ethical about my decisions, and try to make them as fair and just as I can, without hurting anybody, this includes myself. I enjoy listening to music to pass time, and use it as a way to isolate my self from time to time, as although I can be a social person, I don’t function too well after too much social interaction at one time.
I like to keep my schedule very busy. Only recently giving up life long hobbies that took up most of my week, only leaving a day or two free. Although I do a lot less outside of school, I almost never say no to a volunteering opportunity. I currently take part in musical theatre, singing lessons and I am a young leader in the scouting association (as well as being in the Explorer section of scouts myself) on a regular basis, but also volunteer to help clean up campsites and help with my local environment group.
Although I do not currently have a job, I am looking for something part-time, despite my already busy lifestyle. It would be useful to earn some money to help buy necessities.
My music taste ranges from pop punk to musical theatre. I like to listen to bands such as 'panic! At The Disco' and 'bring me The Horizon', however I also like to listen to the soundtracks of many musicals such as 'Witches of Eastwick' and 'Chicago'.
My most watched TV channel is probably E4, with BBC One as a close second. I spend a lot of my free time on social media and reading, but I enjoy going on long hikes, and camping out.
The brands I buy from tend to be shops such as H&M, Starbucks and WHSmiths.
My Music Autobiography
I love this song because the combination of the lyrics and style of music works really well. The way the lyrics are written is really clever, and it is by one of my favorite bands.
2)Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ
In my opinion, you cant really get better than this classic. i love how the style of music changes so many times and so smoothly in just one song.
3) Ace of Spades- Motorhead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcf7DnHi54g
This song takes me back to when I was a lot younger, and my brothers and I would sing this song when playing cards.
4) Highway To Hell- AC/DC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKggnBh2Mdw
I love everything about his song. theres not much i love more than blasting AC/DC through my headphones.
5) I can Do better than that- Anna Kendrick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHrqIUYyhtE
From the Film musical 'The last five years' This song always puts me in a better mood and helps boost my confidence on rough days.
6) What if life were more like theatre- Neil Patrick Harris. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qs1Y8McJiY
This Tony awards opening defines my life. I have loved musical theater from a young age, and will continue to throughout the rest of my life.
7) Dont threaten me with a good time- panic! At The Disco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5NqIsnyTG8
This song was my summer anthem last year, and I don't think i will ever stop loving it. It disconnects me from my reality and I just love it.
8) New Perspective- Panic! At the Disco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3sA5plF6kE
This song is really chilled and laid back, but with a driving rhythm. It really boosts my confidence and i will never say no to listening to it
9) Zombie- Jamie T https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PU4d5Iogd4
Yet another classic. This song is very nostalgic and reminds me of a simpler time.
10) The Show Must Go On- Queen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t99KH0TR-J4
Finishing with another Queen song, this is said a lot in the theatre world. It has a powerful message and It really helps get me hyped up, whether I'm performing or not.
Media Lesson: Audience Profiling In Magazines
It is usually obvious to a reader, just by glancing at a magazine cover, what the Magazine is about. For example a magazine filled with dark and dull colours, with men with heavy eye make-up on, hints towards a heavy metal magazine, and this suspicion will be confirmed when they spot the skull imagery and the stern expressions on the men. However some magazines go for a less obvious approach, using a minimal design for there front page, like just a head with little text around it, including the masthead. After a while it may be discovered that it is an indie music magazine.
A mass audience are those who consume mainstream or popular texts. Some examples of these could be Soaps or sitcoms.
On the contrary a niche audience is a much smaller audience, but a lot more influential.
When marketing any media Item, they look the demographics of their consumers. These are called 'GEARS'.
- Gender
- Ethnicity
- Age
- Religion/Nationality
- Socio-economic group
They also look at
- Sexuality
- Occupation
- Education
- Annual income
- Disposable income
- Current lifestyle
- Aspirational or Designed lifestyle culture
- Media interests
- Buying habits
- Loyalty to brands
They also put people into groups, according to their occupation and class. They are as follows:
Group A
- Lawyers
- Doctors
- Scientists
- Well paid professions
Group B
- Teachers
- Middle management
- Fairly well-paid professions
Group C1
- Junior management
- Bank Clerks
- Nurses
- 'White collar' professions
Group C2
- Electricians
- Plumbers
- Carpenters
- 'Blue collar' professions
Group D
- Manual workers
- Drivers
- Post sorters
Group E
- Students
- Unemployed
- Pensioners
As well as looking and demographics they also look at Psycho-graphics which are the personality and behavioural traits.
The 4 Cs model- Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation:
- The Explorer
- The Succeeder
- The Resigned
- The Struggler
- The Mainstream
- The Aspirer
